Whenever you experience some kind of internal struggles or emotional pain/ difficulties it is preferable to talk to a Psychologist or Counselor.
But before you approach a Counselor it is important to understand, what exactly is counselling? During a counselling you can discuss about your struggles & problems to a counselor. You will be in a safe hands meaning you will not be judged or misunderstood in any way. It is collaboration where a person & a counselor come together to work towards some positive & desirable outcome. So it is a two way process & not a one way. It is a place where you can be honest & express about how you truly feel, share your thoughts & gain better understanding about it.
But here the question comes to our mind, Why to approach counselor & not to solve it on our own? I am sure everybody has their own resources & ways to cope with what troubles their mind. But when your usual ways does not work, it’s beneficial to approach a Counselor or Psychologist. They are trained & qualified professional so not only do they listen but also help you to see things in newer perspective & provide alternative ways to overcome your challenges.
And when you finally decide to approach a counselor, what you can expect to happen in counselling? I would like to mention here counselling does not mean your problems are going to be solved magically. Counselor do not give advice or solve your problems but they facilitate the process of finding ways to overcome your challenges on your own, of course you will be supported throughout the process. So client has a major role to play in counselling. Counselling is not just about talking or discussing things, it will effectively work only when the client is committed towards making changes. Whatever being discussed in counselling, it is very important for a client to apply it outside the sessions in order for it to work. It requires consistency on part of client to create a necessary change.
Counselling can definitely help you in many ways. I am sharing some of them so that next time when you think about approaching a counselor, you will have a fare idea about what to expect in it.
